Environment Festival Held Need Stressed for Collaborative Efforts for Environmental Protection

Karachi: Provincial Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs, Government of Sindh Fayyaz Ali Butt has said that public awareness should be promoted especially among children and youth for the noble cause of environmental and health protection for greater good of society.

He stated this while addressing at the ceremony of Environment Festival organized by National Forum for Environment & Health (NFEH) at PAF Museum here the other day in connection with upcoming World Environment Day on 05 June.

The Minister said it was high time that collaborative efforts should be made at every level of society for overcoming problem of environmental pollution.

He said that festival activity like the one organized by NFEH would be highly helpful for learning and awareness of youth and children on important health and environmental issues. He appreciated the participating children, students, and teachers of the festival who by displaying their projects and contesting in different competitions had shown ample knowledge and understanding of environmental issues.

Speaking on the occasion, NFEH President Muhammad Naeem Qureshi said that his forum had organized weeklong activities since beginning of month of June to mark World Environment Day.

For organizing these activities, a network of concerned organizations was established in collaboration with United Nations Environment Programme, office of Commissioner Karachi, and other relevant commercial, industrial establishments, and NGOs.

The NFEH chief said the seriousness of issue of environmental degradation should be felt by all the concerned sections of society and in this regard all relevant public and governmental organizations should play their due part.

He said that all major and mainstream political parties in their election manifestoes had given due importance to environmental protection and related issues but in reality these organizations had been faraway from taking any practical step towards this vital cause.

He thanked Sindh government’s Department of Youth Affairs, K-Electric, CRLF and other organizations who supported holding of environment festival in Karachi.

On the occasion, K-Electric also organized a session for creating awareness among masses for energy conservation. Some of the prominent schools whose students participated in the festival were Karachi Vocational Training Centre, Civil Aviation Authority School, Happy Palace Grammar School, Safeena Girls’ School, Madrassah Faqeeria School, AMSB School, Attiya’s Learning School.

The Minister on the occasion gave away certificates of participation and prizes among contesting students.

The festival was attended by a large number of people. The activities of environment week will continue till 08 June, 2015.

Also present on the occasion were Consul General of Switzerland in Karachi Emil Wyss, Honorary Consul General of Morocco in Karachi Mirza Ishtiaq Baig, Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui, Samir Mir Shaikh, Ruqiya Naeem, Ghulam Kibria, Maryam Fatima.
