Beach Cleaning Programme Held to mark World Earth Day

KARACHI: A beach cleaning programme was held at Sea View shoreline in Clifton to mark the World Earth Day on April, 22, 2015. Participants of the session who volunteered to clean the Sea view shoreline, near Dolmen Mall Clifton, included activists of relevant non-governmental organizations, school going students and their teachers, and other concerned common citizens. The National Forum for Environment and Health (NFEH) organized the event in coloration collaboration with K-Electric and District Municipal Corporation (DMC) of District South of the city.

Speaking on the occasion, NFEH President Naeem Qureshi said that his forum had planned weeklong activities in collaboration with concerned educational, industrial, commercial, municipal, and non-governmental organizations to observe the Global Earth Day this year.

The NFEH chief thanked on the occasion the Commissioner Karachi, provincial Forest Department, DMC South, K-Electric, and other concerned corporate bodies for ensuring cooperation and providing material support for the beach cleaning session.

Director Energy Conservation of K-Electric Asif Siddiqui, speaking on the occasion, said that privatized power utility would provide utmost support to the cause of environmental protection and improvement. He said the privatized power had been working on the plans to conserve electricity in the city, which was also a step ahead towards conservation and protection of environment. He appealed to the concerned citizens to adopt a cautious and careful approach in usage of electricity and other energy resources.

The activists who took active part in the beach cleaning session at Sea view, Clifton picked up garbage littered near the shoreline through safe and recommended means for two hours and disposed of the collected pieces garbage at the nearby designated secured location.

Administrator DMC South Mir Farooq Lango said on the occasion that city of Karachi could be made a cleaner and greener metropolis by eliminating the menace of pollution. He said that all the concerned circles had to wage concerted and collective struggle for the cause of environmental protection.

The students of Civil Aviation School and Akbar Public in Karachi, along with schoolteachers and administrators, took part in the beach cleaning programme.

Others who were present on the occasion at the Sea View beach included Hamid Alvi, Adnan Farooqui, Syeda Naqvi, Raees Hyder Zaidi, Ghulam Kabria, Maryam Fatima, and Asif Azeem.
